Permission granted for 34 caravans at Selby nature reserve

Plans to site 34 static caravans at a Selby nature reserve have been given the green light, despite concerns from residents.

Miles Leslie Properties Ltd had originally applied for permission for 49 holiday lodges at the nature reserve west of Bawtry Road and north of the A63.

They then reduced the number to address ecological and landscape concerns, as the location is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation with two lakes.

Four types of caravans are proposed, up to 20m long. The proposals also include decking and internal roads, and a management office.

A number of locals had objected to the plans. Their concerns included an increase in traffic on already-congested Bawtry Road; the impact on wildlife; and increased noise and pollution.

A report for North Yorkshire Council said: “The proposed development would result in the currently unused former clay pits lakes being used for leisure purposes.

“This will result in a change to the character and appearance of the nature site, through people and property using the site.

“The 34 units is considered a reasonable compromise, and a combination of new landscaping and careful measures controlled by conditions will ensure the use can co-exist in this natural setting without unduly harming the character of the site.”

It also said the development was located “a good distance away from residential properties so as to not cause harm through excessive noise and disturbance”.

The council granted planning permission, subject to a site investigation “to assess the nature, scale and extent of any land contamination and the potential risks to human health”.

And no swimming, fishing or water sports would be allowed in the lakes.
