Russell Bisset, Northern Monk founder and MD, said that “York’s been top of the list” of the locations they want to have a presence in – and that time has come tonight.

The vast bar runs the length of one wall on the ground floor and it has 20 craft beers on tap.

The venue also has an in-house food hall run by Supamarkets, with three different food offerings. Fu Express will be serving up bao buns like Hoisin Pork and Korean Chicken, as well as dishes including Fu Katsu (£14), Cauliflower Bowl (£14), and Chicken Karaage (£8).

Yonkers will be offering pizza slices and full pies from £4.50, with tasty topping combos such as Truffle Mushroom and Spicy Salami. And get some tempting tacos from Crudo Cantina with options like Achiote Ham Hock (£13) and Baja Fish (£15).

Northern Monk has invested more than £300K in the York venture, and it’s created ten jobs.

Russell said: “For us, it’s a big investment. We’re an independent craft brewery. So it’s a bit of a leap of faith, but one we’re really excited to make.”

The opening of the York venue marks the next step in Leeds-based Northern Monk’s ambition to be the biggest independent craft brewer in Europe within ten years.

Future plans for venue include pub quizzes, bingo nights and live music.

The Northen Monk Refectory is open seven days a week. It’ll be open from 12pm to 12am Monday to Thursdays, 12pm to 1am on Fridays, and 10am to 1am on Saturday and Sundays.
