A woman is in custody after reports she was shouting racist abuse at people in Scarborough town centre.
Police received a call shortly after 2pm yesterday (Saturday) and located a 30-year-old suspect at a nearby property on Scalby Road.
She was arrested on suspicion of a racially/religiously aggravated public order offence, and affray, after furniture was thrown towards officers.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “She remains in custody at this time while enquiries continue.
“We know our communities in Scarborough don’t want division – no one should be fearful to leave the house, go to a place of worship, or carry out their daily routines.
“So we take pride in the fact that people are supporting one another, standing side-by-side with friends and neighbours against those trying to incite fear or commit crime.
“You have our full support, and we, along with our partners, will do all we can to keep you safe.”
