Plans updated for York Sainsbury’s site redevelopment – Car park will now stay

Plans for the redevelopment of a retail site in York have been refined following an initial consultation.

And more details have emerged about what could be built on Foss Bank, after the Sainsbury’s store closes and is demolished.

The proposed development no longer includes the Foss Bank car park, which will remain leased to City of York Council.

Argo Real Estate Ltd and Fusion Group have already said they want to deliver “a vibrant mixed-use community” at Foss Bank.

Work is slated to start next year, after the Sainsbury’s supermarket there closes in January. The Go Outdoors store on the site has been shut for months, after it moved to the big new store at Vangarde.

Both stores will be demolished under the proposals.

According to an application for a screening opinion from City of York Council, the plan is to build:

  • student accommodation with around 1,450 bedrooms
  • approximately 175 apartments
  • commercial buildings with about 500 sq m of floorspace
  • and public open space.

Following feedback from the public and the council this summer, the updated draft plans include additional green open spaces, further detail on the scheme design, and a reduction in the overall footprint of development on the site.

A spokesperson for the development said: “The scheme includes a range of student homes and co-living spaces which appeal to a diverse range of students, young professionals, and others who want to benefit from a community-centric living environment.”

For the student accommodation, the scheme provides 9.44m² of open space per bedroom “which is significantly more than other comparable student-led developments in York”.

The developers are holding another consultation on their plans.

This will take place between 3pm and 7pm on Thursday 21st November at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel on St Maurice’s Road.

The development team will be on hand to answer any questions about the proposals.
