New bridge goes into place – as York road closure causes long tailbacks

These are pictures of the new bridge being put in place in York.

The pedestrian and cycle bridge is due to go over the railway line from Water End.

As a result Water End was shut from last night (Friday) at the junction at Boroughbridge Road to just before the Salisbury Terrace junction.

It means there’s no access from the A19 (Clifton Green) to the A59 (from Boroughbridge Road) until 11.59pm tomorrow (Sunday, 19 October).

The closure brought long delays on the York Outer Ring Road and other key routes today.

As the positioning of the bridge can only happen when no trains are running, it is due to be winched into place tonight.

Contractors John Sisk & Son are in charge of the project, which is part of the redevelopment of York Central.

The bridge will only open in 2027 when all other work to build the junction into the development is completed.
