Huge new store planned for Monks Cross in York – taking the space of three former shops

A huge new store is coming to Monks Cross in York.

Plans have been submitted for the B&M superstore at the shopping park, complete with large outdoor garden centre.

It will be the third B&M in the city, after openings in Clifton Moor and at Foss Islands retail parks.

The new shop would take over units 1, 1A, 2 and 2A at Monks Cross, near Primark. This would create a store with 34,000 sq ft of retail space (3,171 sq m).

The mezzanine floors would be removed as part of the development.

Two of the units, which previously housed Poundland and Hays Travel, are vacant. Hobbycraft occupies unit 2 – it is not yet known what is planned for this store.

“The proposed development works will follow the same layout at originally found on site,” planning documents state.

“The four units will be amalgamated with a shopfront entrance along the west facing facade…

“All works proposed to the western facing facade of the unit have been designed to be minimal, and tie in with the newly refurbished retail terrace, ensuring a uniform appearance.

“This includes the incorporation of new glazing to replace previous shopfront entrances. To the rear, the garden centre fencing will be made up of prison mesh.”
