York’s favourite buildings revealed – including an ancient monument, a bridge club and a B&B

One of York’s oldest buildings, a contemporary new housing development, a bridge club, a former convent, and a bed & breakfast took the top honours last night at the 2022 York Design Awards.

The best of the city’s architecture once again took centre stage after a three-year absence.

The recently restored Clifford’s Tower, the largest surviving structure from the medieval royal castle of York, was the winner of both The Press People’s Choice Award and the Young People’s Award (under 18s).

MonkBridge House B&B and Moxy Hotel both won in the Commercial category, while York Bridge Club in Acomb was one of the winners of the Sustainability award.

Chair of the judging panel Andy Davey, senior partner at Simpson & Brown Architects; said: “All the judges were greatly impressed by the quality and professionalism exhibited by this year’s entries.

“It proves yet again that the city of York continues to inspire and foster good, uplifting architecture and sensitive design.

“The winners of the various categories, and indeed all the entries, have contributed enormously to the burgeoning built heritage of the city – from the ‘small but perfectly formed’ new house at Cloister Garth, tucked discreetly behind a screen wall in Marygate to the much grander flagship projects at York Guildhall, Clifford’s Tower and The Creative Centre at York St John University.”

Chair of the York Design Awards committee Ann Reid said: “Congratulations to all our 2022 award winners.

“We were delighted with the quality of the entries once again this year, which presented our judging panel with a tough challenge deciding which projects should take the honours.”
