Construction work has begun on the new Lidl supermarket for York.
When it opens at Monks Cross, it will be the third Lidl in the city.
Scheduled to open before the end of the year, the new store will have a 1,516m² sales area, and feature a bakery, the Middle of Lidl aisles, and customer toilets with baby-changing facilities.
It is based on the site of the old TK Maxx, next door to Sainsbury’s. The old store will be demolished.
The car park will come with seven electric vehicle charging points, while solar panels will help power the store.
New trees will be planted as part of the soft landscaping included in the project.
Lidl said it was a “multi-million pound investment” and will create 40 jobs.

“Our dedicated teams have worked incredibly hard over the past few years to reach this milestone, and we’re pleased to confirm we’re on track to welcome customers before the end of 2025.
“As well as creating dozens of jobs, this store will give residents even greater access to our high-quality, affordable products in an area where we’ve seen increasing demand. We will, of course, keep the community updated as work progresses.”
