‘We’ve not seen this in 20 years!’ Seal spotted by the river in York

Meet York’s newest tourist – and he’s ventured a long way from home.

This seal was spotted today on the side of the River Ouse by one of the team at City Cruises York.

It was a real surprise, said the company’s commercial and marketing manager Chris Pegg. No one at City Cruises has ever seen a seal here before – and some have more than 20 years’ experience of working on the city’s waterways.

The seal was pictured at Clifton Sands – about 40 miles from the sea.

“It’s a very rare sight,” Chris, who’s the commercial and marketing manager for City Cruises York.

“It’s miles and miles inland. No one here has ever seen a seal on the Ouse.”

City Cruises is now running a Seal Spotting Cruise!

We’ve had a look through the archives. In 2020 a seal was videoed swimming in the Ouse at Naburn Lock.

We reported a seal spotted in Tadcaster on January last year.

And another seal, or perhaps it’s the same one, was pictured in the river at Bishopthorpe last May.

But this is the closes a seal’s been to York city centre for many a long year, it seems.
