Tesco wants to open another supermarket in York

A former chip shop could soon be reborn as a supermarket.

According to the latest planning documents, a Tesco Express wants to open in the former Wackers fish and chips restaurant on Gillygate.

The supermarket is asking for permission to rebrand the familiar green exterior with Tesco signage.

We reported in November 2020 that Wackers was closing after 25 years of serving up fish suppers.

It shut when the owners for the previous 14 years, Dave and Jill Richards, retired.

And in December 2021, permission was sought to turn the ground floor into a shop, and create five flats above.

This was granted in February.

The arrival of a Tesco Express will add to a number of small supermarkets in the area.

There is a Sainsbury’s Local close by on Bootham and a Co-op on Clarence Street.

York already has a number of Tesco Express stores, including on Low Ousegate, Piccadilly, Goodramgate and Huntington Road.
