Plan for new arts and exhibition space in the heart of York

A new vision for York includes an arts and exhibition space created in the heart of York.

City of York Council has released a York Prospectus, outlining how the city can grow over the next seven years.

The ambition set out for 2032 is for York to be a “vibrant, prosperous, welcoming and sustainable city, where everyone can share and take pride in its success”.

Among the ambitions outlined in the document is creating “a new arts and exhibition space in the middle of the city that will welcome world-class artists and provide space to showcase emerging talent”.

Although York is “the only UNESCO City of Media Arts in the UK”, the prospectus notes that “there is limited creative space in the city, particularly in its historic centre, that can be utilised to test, innovate and showcase”.

Research is now underway to identify a location for the culture hub, which it’s hoped will attract new talent.

The prospectus also details plans to upgrade the area around Parliament Street, with an estimated bill of £11 million.

That would include “improved public realm incorporating greater accessibility,
cycling corridors, increased green spaces, event space”.

Other plans outlined in the prospectus include a bio-Yorkshire campus, a business enterprise zone around York St John University, as well as the Station Gateway, outer ring road and Haxby Station plans already underway.

The ambition is to grow everyone’s prosperity.

Cllr Claire Douglas, leader of City of York Council said: “This is a hugely ambitious and exciting plan that’s involved significant consultation and collaboration with city partners to determine where investment will make the most difference for York.

“There is already much to be proud of in our city but this Prospectus provides a step change in approach and sets a vision to go further and faster to make sure everyone feels the benefits of inward investment and economic growth.”

Cllr Pete Kilbane, deputy leader, said: “By attracting investment, building more affordable homes, and improving infrastructure and public spaces, our aim is that local residents and businesses will reap the benefits.
