A 19-year-old man died as a result of drowning after entering the River Ouse in York, an inquest heard this morning (Thursday).
The inquest into the death of Thomas George Bruce-Gregg, from Malton, was opened and adjourned at Northallerton.
The incident took place in the early hours of 27 June, when Mr Bruce-Gregg was seen in the Ouse near Kings Staith before disappearing under the water.
As YorkMix previously reported, North Yorkshire Police were called at 2.48am following reports that two people had entered the Ouse.
The inquest heard that police later discovered Mr Bruce-Gregg at the bottom of the river. He was brought to the bank, where his death was confirmed.
North Yorkshire coroner Jon Heath said the provisional cause of death was drowning. The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
Police arrested a 19-year-old woman who was also seen to enter the water with the man on suspicion of assault.
