It is the last day to use York’s e-scooter and e-bike rental scheme today (Friday, 31 May).
The vehicles which offered a whole new, eco-friendly way to get around our city, will be removed over the weekend.
Tier revealed it was pulling out of York in March after more than three years.
The launch in October 2020 was its first in a UK city.
Beginning at the university and hospital, the trial was expanded to cover much of the wider city. In April 2021, e-bikes were added to the scooters.
City of York Councillors unanimously voted to extend Tier’s contract after the initial 12 months of operation. The scheme was said to be “hugely popular”.
In the end, Tier couldn’t make York profitable enough. Jessica Murphy, Tier’s head of public policy UK, said: “Each city has its own unique set up and unfortunately York’s size and geography make it difficult for us to run financially self-sustaining service in the long run.
She told YorkMix today: “The service will be shut down at midnight. If a user is riding a vehicle at this time, the ride trip can still end. It will not come to a halt mid journey.”
All the Tier scooters and bikes will be removed from the streets of York this weekend.
“The vehicles will be recycled or sent to another market for use,” Jessica said.
And the final journey tally? There have been 60,000 riders and 600,000 rides.
