York shop next to building earmarked for demolition goes up for sale

A shop that could form the corner of a brand new alleyway in York is up for sale.

Number 4 Spurriergate, a four storey building, is on the market for £500,000.

It was most recently home to Beaverbrooks. It closed when the firm relocated to York’s new ‘jewellery quarter’ on Davygate.

The building dates back to the 1840s, but the shopfront is a 20th century addition.

Under the bold Coney Street Riverside scheme, it would remain. But the building next door, currently home to Boots, would be demolished.

This would create a walkway down to the river, notionally called Waterloo Place.
