York school plans to build new studio and animal house

A York school is planning big changes.

Danesgate Community has put in plans to demolish one building and build two more.

Under the proposals, its coach house would be replace with a single storey building with a flat roof, to be used as a studio for one-to-one teaching and small discussion groups.

The pupil support centre would be extended to form a gym and music room. And an animal house would also be created on the site.

In supporting documents, the school states: “The number of children with Social and Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) needs is increasing across the UK.

“York has seen a significant increase alongside an increased number of children and young people with Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs).

“Adaptations to the Danesgate site is needed to ensure the site is better able to offer
specialist education for children and young people with SEMH as their primary need.”

The plans would also see new disabled parking bays and better fencing around the playing fields
