York City FC caused concern today when its official X account reposted a far right activist.
The club has launched an investigation after the channel reposted Tommy Robinson, the founder of the English Defence League.
Although the repost was quickly deleted, it was spotted by many City supporters who asked what was going on.
Robinson wrote this on his X account about the ‘Day of Freedom’: “We’re setting up in Trafalgar Square for the biggest patriotic rally the UK has ever seen 🇬🇧”
This was the post, dated 10.36am today, that the @YorkCityFC account reposted.

Here are a selection of what fans said about the incident:
- I hope we are better than retweeting this mind
- What on earth. I hope that was a slip. Bit strange
- Seems like a mistake but I would like clarification from the club. We shouldn’t have anything to do with people like him!
- Don’t worry YCFC it’s social media – always full of accidental pitfalls. Worry about what happens on the pitch!
The club put out this statement: “The club does not in any circumstance support Tommy Robinson, or make any political or otherwise statements that could cause offence to supporters.
“The repost has since been taken down and we would like to apologise if this repost caused any offence to anybody. Please be assured we are looking into this as a matter of urgency.”
Thousands of people have gathered in central London for the march led by Robinson and a counter-protest.
Around 1,000 police officers have been deployed to the streets of the capital to “keep the peace” amid opposing demonstrations on Saturday.
In York, after the repost was deleted, @YorkCityFC went back to posting about today’s pre-season friendly against Notts County.
