Customers have expressed their shock and sadness after a much-loved independent shop has announced it’s closing after 45 years.

York Cycleworks has been trading on Lawrence Street since 1980.

But it will shut at the end of this month, the team announced on social media.

Fraz, Dave, Liam, Neil, Jon and Tom said on Facebook: “We have loved helping York and North Yorkshire get on its bike from our humble premises on Lawrence Street.

“The cycling industry finds itself in a very challenging period and we can no longer compete with what is on offer from the internet.

“We have tried our best and had a blast meeting some brilliant characters along the way. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years.

“Also, a huge thank you to the wonderful team members who have been part of our rich history.”

As well as stocking some of the biggest brands in cycling, York Cycleworks was known for its expertise in all aspects of cycling.

Their many customers wished them well. York Cycle Campaign wrote: “Sad news to see another indie bike shop close!

“We wish you all the best, whatever you end up doing and hopefully, for many of you that will still be somewhere in the cycling industry in York.”

Another said: “Thanks for all your help and support over the years; such a great hub for cycling locally – for those who loved riding bikes – and so many great friends that worked there and rode for the team.”

And a third wrote: “What a sad sad day. I’m really sorry to hear this news. You guys have been the go to shop for my new bikes and servicing and you always offered advice and had a little banter along the way.”

The shop has now launched a closing down sale. Find out more at the shop and on the York Cycleworks website.
