North Yorkshire Police tweeted at 1.40pm: “One car is not drivable so officers are doing traffic control for the next hour. Please avoid the area.”

Police officers directed traffic around the stricken vehicle, which caused queuing traffic both on the ring road and Haxby Road, until it was recovered.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from York and Huntington responded to a three-vehicle road traffic collision involving a van and two cars.

“All occupants were out on arrival and crews provided scene  safety.”
