One of York’s most historic buildings has opened its doors to the public for the very first time.
And the open event at The Retreat in York – the first in its 200-year history – was such a success, a series of tours are planned in the coming weeks.
The Retreat is a Grade II listed landmark set within 37 acres of picturesque landscaping.
Specialist heritage developer, PJ Livesey now owns the site and is preparing to develop it.
As part of York Unlocked, PJ Livesey opened The Retreat to 850 exclusive guests at the end of August, giving them the opportunity to discover the history of this fascinating estate and to learn about its future.

Many attendees shared personal memories and stories from the building’s past, giving the day a profound sense of connection and history. The overwhelming response highlighted the public’s fascination with both the heritage of The Retreat and its exciting future right in the heart of York.
Following this success, a series of further events have been organised, to provide residents with an opportunity to step inside The Retreat again.
The developer has arranged tours, talks and concerts, which you can find out about here.
Plans for the site

Founded in the late 18th century by Quaker philanthropist William Tuke, The Retreat is celebrated as one of the world’s first modern mental health hospitals.
Guided by Quaker principles of compassion and dignity, its design and approach reflected a revolutionary philosophy of care, prioritising humane treatment for patients at a time when such principles were almost unheard of.
PJ Livesey is developing The Retreat with a mix of 120 heritage and newly built homes. The developer says it will “meticulously uphold the character and history that make The Retreat so special”

Georgina Lynch, managing director at PJ Livesey, said: “The Retreat is rich in history, architectural significance, and emotional connection.
“We’ve been immersed in the story and significance of this site since we became custodians and we’re incredibly proud to be intrusted with its next chapter.
“We know just how much The Retreat means to the city, and our aim is to honour that legacy through respectful, design-led development – delivering not just exceptional homes, but a historic haven: a true sanctuary for modern living inspired by the past.”
Those interested in the new homes, can register to attend a preview event taking place on Thursday 23 October. The website has full details.
