Murder suspect named in court – as tributes paid to ‘wonderful’ Malton mother

A man has appeared in court charged with murder today (Monday) – as the family of the woman who died paid tribute to a “wonderful daughter, mum, auntie and little sister”.

Lisa Welford, 49, was pulled out of the River Derwent last Wednesday (24 April) and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Sadly, she was later pronounced dead.

Police charged a 47-year-old Malton man with her murder in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Vincent Joseph Morgan, 47, appeared at York Magistrates’ Court today charged with Lisa’s murder.

Mr Morgan, of Chandlers Wharf, Castlegate, Malton, spoke only to confirm his name and address and wasn’t asked to enter a plea to the charge.

His case was sent to Leeds Crown Court where he will appear tomorrow (Tuesday) for a plea-and-trial preparation hearing. He was remanded in custody until then.

Meanwhile, Lisa’s family have paid a moving tribute to her. They said: “Lisa was a wonderful daughter, mum, auntie, and little sister.

“She had many friends both locally and further afield and will be sadly missed by all.
