Man arrested after flag with threatening message placed on York city walls

Police are looking for two witnesses in connection with an incident where a flag with a threatening message was draped over the city walls.

It happened at about midday on Tuesday (16 September).

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Two men are believed to have come to the aid of a woman who was verbally abused and followed by another man after she walked into the pole that was holding the flag.”

“We are appealing to the men to come forward along with anyone else who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident.”

The England flag carried the message ‘This one’s for you Maskill’.

It was clearly aimed at York Central MP Rachael Maskell, with the misspelling possibly deliberate.

Ms Maskell has been an early and consistent critic of the flag campaign, first calling for them to be taken down back in August.

A 54-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody for questioning.
