Main York road to close while bridge is installed

A busy York road will be closed while a new pedestrian bridge is installed.

The footbridge is being built alongside the existing rail bridge at Water End to provide safer access into York Central.

It is part of the infrastructure which has also seen a new road, footpaths and cycleways built through the development.

There will be a temporary road closure at Water End from 9pm on Friday 17 October until 12am Monday 20 October.

During this time there will be no access between the A19 and the A59. A diversion for drivers will be signposted and the number 10 bus route will also be diverted.

The road closure is needed to allow the new footbridge to be lifted into place. Because of the size of the bridge specialist cranes are required.

The bridge can only be lifted into place when the railway line is not in use and will therefore take place overnight on Saturday – as long as it is not too windy for the cranes to operate safely.

The stretch of road to close

This is the first of two new bridges that are part of the next phase of the York Central infrastructure works and is a new pedestrian and cycle bridge to run alongside the existing Severus Bridge.

This new bridge will mean that the project team can undertake lane widening on the existing road bridge, creating a dedicated right turn lane into the new road through York Central at a later phase of the project.

The bridge will only open in 2027 when all other work to build the junction into the development is completed.
