The final performance of the Wizard Of Oz had to be cancelled at the last minute after rain came through the roof.
The York Stage production, described as ‘magical’ by our reviewer, couldn’t go ahead due to safety concerns last night (Saturday).
Some theatregoers said the leak caused by the heavy rainfall had seen the roof “dripping from the gods”.
Some members of the audience were taken from the upper circle into a bar while the problem was investigated.
Then, shortly before the curtain was due to go up, director Nik Briggs delivered the news to the audience that the show was cancelled.
A spokesperson for the theatre said that the decision was a precaution and that customer safety was its priority.
They said all tickets would be refunded. An investigation was underway but all scheduled shows were due to go ahead as normal.
York Theatre shared this message: “Tonight’s final performance of The Wizard of Oz at the Grand Opera House York was sadly cancelled by the venue due to a building issue beyond our control caused by the recent heavy rainfall.
“Audience safety is always the top priority, and we thank everyone for their understanding.
“While it’s not the ending we had hoped for, this magical production has been filled with joy, wonder and unforgettable moments shared with our incredible audiences.”
