‘Angry resident’ dumps garden waste on York councillor’s doorstep

A pile of garden waste has been dumped on the doorstep of a York councillor.

And he believes it was left there by a resident angered by the introduction of green bin collection charges.

Tony Fisher, the Liberal Democrat councillor for Strensall, discovered the sack of dead branches and leaves strewn across his drive on Saturday morning.

He believes it was a message from a resident “presumably unhappy at the Labour council’s green bin tax”.

Cllr Fisher said: “I’m not surprised that residents are unhappy with the decisions being made by Labour locally and nationally.

“This is the political climate that Labour are creating with their programme of austerity.

“The Labour-led council introduced the deeply unpopular green bin tax whilst charging the maximum council tax despite having promised at last year’s election to freeze council tax.

“And now we have the national Labour government cutting the winter fuel allowance for many pensioners who are by no means wealthy, altogether adding £500 a year to residents’ costs.”

But the Labour hit back at his claims.

Executive member for environment and climate emergency Cllr Jenny Kent said: “The green waste subscription service was introduced to help stabilise the council’s finances, with York joining around three quarters of all councils nationally now operating this service.

“This means only those receiving green waste collections will now pay for them.

“Without any evidence, it’s unhelpful to speculate on how this waste arrived on Cllr Fisher’s driveway.

“So far, he seems more concerned about playing petty politics than condemning the alleged fly-tipping of waste on his property.”
