Four firefighters go into the river to free a trapped sheep in York

A rescue operation was mounted last night after a sheep became stuck in a York river.

Firefighters were called to help with the incident in the River Foss in Huntington at 8.21pm.

A crew from York and the animal rescue unit from Malton went to help the trapped sheep.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Despite the owners best efforts to help the sheep it was proven to dangerous to enter the water.

“Four firefighters entered the water in water rescue uniform to lift the sheep safely back to land.”
