Flooding: Car parks and roads closed, driver rescued from water, river levels peak today

The flooding in York and North Yorkshire has left a number of roads and car parks closed.

There are more than 30 flood warnings and alerts across the county.

York remains open for business thanks to flood defence measures including the deployment of the Foss Barrier.

Tadcaster Bridge is closed, one of nine routes in North Yorkshire either closed or passable with care due to floodwater.

At 5.54pm last night firefighters rescued a driver stuck in floodwater in Acomb.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from Knaresborough and Wetherby responded to a vehicle stuck in flood water.

“Crews waded through flood water to assist the driver through flood water to dry land.

“The incident was left with highways who were in process of closing the road when the vehicle was found.”

In York:

  • Rowntree Park, Rowntree Park car park, Rowntree Park play area and Rowntree Park toilets will be closed today (2 January)
  • Rowntree Park reading cafe only accessible via Richardson Street
  • St George’s Field car park and St George’s Field coach park are closed
  • Esplanade car park is closed.

The River Ouse at the Viking Recorder in York had reached 3.61m at 8am today. Anything over 3m causes flooding.

It is now forecast to peak at 3.78m this afternoon.

Today’s flood warnings include:

An ice warning is in force today for York and North Yorkshire from 5pm today to 10am tomorrow. A snow warning is in place from Saturday at midday till Sunday at 11.59pm.

Temperatures are due to drop to -3°C in York tonight.
