Crews from five fire stations tackled a large moorland blaze started by sparks from a train.
They were called to a report of a line-side fire at Eller Beck, Goathland at 11.50am today (Thursday).
It then spread to open moorland.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews extinguished a fire measuring approximately 40,000 square metres that was caused by sparks from a train at the line side.
“Crews worked with gamekeepers to dampen down hot spots and the perimeter before handing the incident over to local game keepers and North Yorkshire Moors Railway staff.”
This is always a risk during a period of warm, dry weather.
During last summer’s heatwave, North Yorkshire Moors Railway temporarily withdrew its steam engines after firefighters were called to four trackside fires in one night.
