Rail lines reopened near York but major disruption expected till the end of the day

There’s a second bout of rail chaos this weekend.

A broken rail between York and Doncaster has caused “major disruption”.

National Rail says: “Those services that are able to travel north through the area are doing so by sharing the same line used by the trains that are travelling south. This is causing heavy delays to services.

“Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or diverted to avoid the affected area.

“Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

If you’ve not yet set off, LNER says: “We strongly advise you to avoid travelling if you can.

“Trains are running, but there is major disruption, and you may be heavily delayed and/or experience severe overcrowding.”

One passenger from York said people were being “crammed onto the train like sardines”.

Today’s problems follow the widespread disruption yesterday due to an emergency services incident near Thirsk.

All lines have now reopened but the disruption will continue till the end of the day, National Rail says.
