York bus stop to be reinstated after it was suspended ‘without warning’

A York bus stop that was suspended without warning is to be reinstated.

Andrew Mortimer, of the Liberal Democrats, says people living near Hull Road were surprised to find the stop at Badger Hill shops had gone, albeit temporarily.

It was part of the disruption caused by the resurfacing of Hull Road.

Mr Mortimer said: “Residents were surprised to find out this morning (Monday) that services were suspended at the bus stop near Badger Hill shops without warning.

“There is no notice explaining what is happening and no alternative temporary stop has been provided.”

Residents were sent a letter about the impact of the resurfacing works on Hull Road.

Mr Mortimer said: “There was no indication that our bus services would be affected by the roadworks, which are due to continue for another two weeks at least.

“Our most frequent bus service, the Number 8 Park & Ride to Grimston Bar, doesn’t call at the bus stops either side of Badger Hill shops – meaning that even if you are able to walk to the next stop there are many fewer buses available.

“I am calling on the council to make sure that buses continue to serve Badger Hill and Osbaldwick whilst the road works continue and where a stop has to be suspended a suitable alternative is put in place.”

A City of York Council spokesperson said: “While carrying out work to update and improve the signals for the bus lane on Hull Road more of the safe working area was coned off than planned by the traffic management company, which regretfully included this bus stop.

“As soon as we became aware of the issue we have worked with the company to resolve this as quickly as possible and the bus stop will be back in use as usual from tomorrow (Tuesday).

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
