York Racecourse and Macmillan Cancer Support are looking for the next generation of amateur jockeys.
Registrations for the 2026 Ernest Cooper Macmillan Ride of Their Lives – one of the most successful charity horse races in the UK – have opened.
In June next year, 12 amateurs will go head-to-head in the just over a mile flat race down the Knavesmire, to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support who provide advice, information and support to people living with cancer.
Members of the public from across the UK are invited to sign up. With the opportunity to have their day in the sun following six months of intense jockey training as well as their vital fundraising, before racing thoroughbred horses on this iconic track.
Elizabeth, one of this year’s competitor, said: “The feeling of riding down the straight at one of the greatest racecourses in the country is unmatched. I really have never felt better than I did when I completed the race this summer.
“My Grandad was a jockey and that is how I got into racing originally. The opportunity to ride in the race was something that has always been on my bucket list, as you get to experience being a jockey for the day.
“It also gives you the chance to do something life changing for people living with cancer.
“It was a fantastic feeling when I saw my fitness improve, all whilst knowing I was challenging myself to benefit those affected by cancer.
“It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. The training, the nerves, the race day buzz, and knowing it was all for such an important cause.
“I would encourage anyone thinking about it to register and get involved as it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Even if you’re just slightly tempted, go for it, you won’t regret it.”
Each amateur jockey commits to raising at least £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support to take part in the race that is now in its 14th year.
The charity race is one of the highlights of Macmillan Charity Raceday that takes place each year and has raised over £11m since its inception over 54 years ago supporting Macmillan on its mission to ensure better cancer care for everyone.
William Derby, Chief Executive at York Racecourse, said: “York Racecourse is incredibly proud of its long running partnership with Macmillan.
“We are very much looking forward to Macmillan Charity Raceday next summer which is the biggest charity race day in British racing. Just by attending and supporting these riders, people are helping to raise vital funds for those living with cancer in Yorkshire and across the UK.”
