‘So proud!’ York Knights win League Leaders’ Shield for first time in the modern era

York Knights clinched the Betfred Championship League Leaders’ Shield with a 52-12 win over Batley Bulldogs.

After a winning run of 19 games stretching back to April, including 16 consecutive league victories, the Knights claimed the trophy for the first time in front of the biggest home crowd of the season.

A first half hat-trick from Ben Jones-Bishop helped build a 24 point half time lead which was never threatened.

Four more tries in the second half completed a memorable and historic afternoon for the Knights at the LNER Community Stadium.

Head coach Mark Applegarth said: “I’m really happy that we could celebrate in front of our own fans. League leaders doesn’t come around often, especially in front of your own fans.

“Just really proud of this group that we could bring that home for the fans – I think it’s the first time since 81 is it? And the first time in the new era.

“This is a really special group and I’m really glad that they’ve got a bit of silverware to reward the hard efforts for our year.”

The Knights now go on to the playoffs.

“At the moment, I just want them to enjoy themselves and live in the moment,” Mark said.

“Then we’ll be back at it tomorrow morning, ready to address what’s coming up, which will be one, potentially two tough games.

“We’re under no illusions whoever you draw in the playoffs, it’s 80 minutes, so you’ve got to make sure you nail that performance.”
