York floods: 50+ pictures as the River Ouse peaks

Here’s how the floods are looking today (Tuesday).

As our pictures show, the River Ouse is pretty high – these pictures were taken this morning a few hours after it reached its peak of 4.19m around 11pm last night.

As at midday, there were still four flood warnings in place for York:

Three flood warnings had been removed in the last 24 hours. The Ouse is now predicted to fall quickly.

Riverside paths are inaccessible. There is standing water at the Skeldergate Bridge end of Skeldergate, although cars have been driving through this morning.

Terry Avenue is underwater. The flood gates and pump is keeping Clementhorpe dry.

Most of Rowntree Park is submerged, although it is still possible to access the café from Richardson Street.

There is standing water on the approach to Millennium Bridge, but you can get to it via the fields.

Pumps are active on Tower Gardens and Peckitt Street. St George’s Field is still underwater and closed.

As usual, thanks to all our modern flood defences, most of York is unaffected by the floods and open for business.

Many Christmas shoppers are stopping to take pictures of the river scenes.
