Thunderstorm warning issued for York and North Yorkshire

Three days into meteorological autumn, and the first weather warning is upon us.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms covering York and North Yorkshire between 2am and 5pm tomorrow (Thursday, 4 September).

Forecasters say it may cause localised flooding and disrupt transport.

There is a “slight chance” of power cuts too.

Rebekah Hicks, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “We’re expecting a band of heavy rain and strong winds to move north-east through the first part of Wednesday, followed by heavy showers and the risk of thunderstorms.”

Most places will have “either non-impactful rain or remain dry” tomorrow, the Met Office said. But “a few places within this area could see 30-60mm in an hour. Hail and lightning will be additional, possibly locally impactful, hazards”.

The rain will not be enough to end the hosepipe ban imposed by Yorkshire Water – it said yesterday reservoir levels are now at 32.6%, well below the 72.7% average for this time of year.

There was one good reason to look to our skies however – the Northern Lights were visible again last night.
