York cycle track underpass reopens

After several months of closure, the underpass on the Selby cycle track in Bishopthorpe has now reopened to the public.

Access beneath Bishopthorpe Bridge, which connects Appleton Court and Brunswick Nursery, is once again available for cyclists and pedestrians, since being closed in January.

The closure was imposed to allow essential works to strengthen the bridge to take place. A weight restriction had been introduced in October 2023 after a report by the RAC Foundation deemed the structure as substandard.

As part of the £300,000 project, contractor PB Construction installed a corrugated steel arch beneath the bridge to reinforce it and secure its long-term future.

The underpass, which previously had a squared design, has been transformed into a more tunnel-like layout.
