A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from York, Acomb and Huntington alongside Malton’s incident support unit assisted specialists with a minor chemical leak inside a public assembly building.

“All persons were evacuated prior to fire crews arrival with no injuries reported.

“Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus equipment neutralised the chemical with on site specialists who were also in attendance.

“Advice was given to the responsible persons and the chemical was expertly cleaned. Gas detectors were also used by crews at this incident.”

A University of York spokesperson said: “The swimming pool at York Sport Village has been temporarily closed after a chlorine alarm was triggered in the plant room.

“A damaged pipe was quickly identified and isolated and the spilt chlorine was quickly contained.

“There were no customers in the building at the time and no one was injured as a result of the incident.

“Engineers are currently on site to repair the affected pipe and we aim to open the pool as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank everyone for their patience.”
