York actor to revive his sell-out Charles Dickens ghost story show this Halloween

Experience a Dickensian ghost story in York this Halloween.

Following a sell-out run last Halloween, York actor James Swanton is reviving his production of The Signal-Man.

The Signal-Man is at York Medical Society on select dates from Thursday 16 to Thursday 28 October.

The solo show will have 10 performances at York Medical Society before transferring to London.

“Last year, I was shocked when every performance of The Signal-Man sold out more than a month in advance,” said James, who this Halloween has scheduled twice as many performances due to demand.

The evening also incorporates a second ghost story by Charles Dickens, The Trial for Murder, and runs as a partner event with the York Ghost Merchants, whose annual Ghost Week celebrations will be taking over the city at the end of October.

James’s previous Dickensian theatre work has been highly acclaimed, with Simon Callow describing his West End play Sikes & Nancy as ‘startling and enthralling’ and Miriam Margolyes calling his performances at the Charles Dickens Museum ‘extraordinary’ and ‘superb’.

In addition to his stage roles, James often appears on film as all manner of demons and monsters. Last year, he was seen in Apartment 7A, Tarot, The First Omen and the final series of Inside No. 9.

Despite these screen roles, James is keen that people experience his work in person.

“Come to The Signal-Man if you want to experience old-fashioned theatrical storytelling in the pricelessly atmospheric setting of York Medical Society.

“Roger Clarke, esteemed author of A Natural History of Ghosts, has been good enough to call me ‘the best interpreter of Charles Dickens’s ghost stories alive’. I’ll be doing my chilling best to live up to that praise.”

Tickets for The Signal-Man start from £7.50 and are available via the York Theatre Royal website.
