Long-closed North Yorkshire village pub set to reopen under new owners

A North Yorkshire village pub could be renovated and reopened after being shut for the last five years.

A planning application has been submitted for work at the 17th century Whitestonecliffe Inn, in Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe, near Thirsk.

Applicant Calverts Carpets seeks to make internal and external alterations to the pub, including replacement windows and doors, a new porch at the front of the building and new double doors at the rear.

Five self-catering holiday units are also proposed at the back of the pub.

Supporting documents say the work is essential to the re-opening of the pub, which has been closed since 2020.

The report, by agents Saddington Taylor, states: “The proposed external works to the public house will improve its physical appearance and the internal refurbishment will improve its overall quality, making it more attractive for use by the local community and visitors.

“The provision of additional accommodation which will attract more visitors to the area and result in economic benefits to the local economy through increased visitor spend and support for local businesses.

“The proposed accommodation will create additional trade for the public house and help sustain this important facility for the benefit of the local community.”

The proposed holiday units would be an extension to an existing terrace of three units and would extend into the car park.

Each unit would have two bedrooms as well as an open-plan kitchen and lounge, and a bathroom.

The car park layout would be amended to accommodate the new visitor units and to provide two disabled parking bays.

The proposals include solar PV panels and ground source heat pumps. A consultation on the plans runs until 2 October.

One local resident has already written to support the plans, saying they would be a “welcome application to restore what has previously been a great asset to the local community”.

The council is aiming to reach a decision on the application by early November.

The pub was bought by a new owner in June this year after being put on the market with an asking price of £395,000 plus VAT.
