Several fires believed to have been started deliberately occurred in York yesterday evening (Saturday).
Fire crews from York responded to both of the reports, which happened within a minute of each other.
The latest incidents come amid a recent spate of suspected arson in the area, prompting a joint operation between the police and the fire service launched earlier this month to tackle the rise.
The first incident took place in Kimberlow Woods at approximately 7:07 pm.
A member of the public alerted Fire Control after coming across a fire in the open in the wooded area.
Upon arrival, a York crew found two separate fires, each measuring approximately 1m2.
The fires were extinguished using knapsack sprayers. A spokesperson confirmed, “The cause is thought to have been deliberate.”
Just one minute later, at 7:08 pm, a second fire was reported in a field off Haxby Road, in York.
A fire crew from Huntington responded after a walker came across an unattended fire, measuring approximately 2m x 2m.
Firefighters extinguished the fire using knapsack sprayers and buckets of water. Once again, it was thought to have been started deliberately.
