How York’s newest shop will look – complete with unique window design

Plans are in for York’s newest shop, complete with a unique window graphic.

YorkMix revealed last month how the former Village Gallery on Colliergate is set to become a bookshop.

Criminally Good Books will stock all kinds of crime fiction, such as historical crime, cosy crime, thriller, mystery, police procedural, and detective fiction.

It’s the brainchild of Isla Coole, who lives in York with her family.

She said her shop will stage themed events like author signings and fingerprint classes, as well as incorporating a recording studio for podcasters.

Now the look of the Grade II listed shop has been revealed.

“The design proposal for the facade of the property is to add hand painted letters in a muted light brown colour to the fascia along with a logo,” planning documents reveal.

“A new painted timber projecting sign will be installed to the existing metal bracket. In addition to this, clear vinyl graphics are proposed for the inside face of the existing glazing – previous vinyl has been removed by outgoing tenants.”

The vinyl graphics features the outline of a body at a crime scene with the words: “Once upon a crime… the butler did it.”

Criminally Good Books is set to open next year.
