An Acomb fire crew responded to initial reports of an automatic fire alarm sounding at a York home last night.

Upon arrival at approximately 11:22pm, firefighters found there to be a fire in the laundry room of the property, located just off Front Street.

A basket of clothes was alight, and the cause is believed to be self combustion.

The crew used one hose reel, two breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera, a triple extension ladder and positive pressure ventilation fan to deal with the incident.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson said: “The fire caused 100% fire damage to the basket, 100% smoke damage to the room and slight heat damage.”
