An emergency road closure in York is causing long tailbacks this evening.

Haxby Road remains closed after an earlier water mains burst.

Work to fix the problem has meant digging up the road to expose the pipework beneath.

Outbound Haxby Road traffic is being diverted at the roundabout near Yearsley Swimming Pool onto Haley’s Terrace and then to Huntington Road.

However, Haxby Road remains open all the way up to the entrance to New Earswick, where the roadworks are in place.

That means people can still get access to Nestle York, York St John University Sports Park and Foss Park Hospital.

Traffic going out of the city along Haxby Road, and both ways on Huntington Road, is very heavy this evening.
