Bakery set to open in former York takeaway

An empty and dilapidated former takeaway looks set for a new lease of life.

What used to be the Pizza Plus at 36 Micklegate could become a bakery if new plans get the go-ahead.

Owners of the building, Fountain Estates Limited, are applying for a change of use for the ground floor unit.

Planning documents say that the proposed incoming tenant for the shop is a bakery.

They want permission for “sale of food and drink for consumption (mostly on the premises)”.

Some internal changes to the ground floor are proposed, including the removal of a modern stud wall and the blocking up of a former doorway.

There are three flats above the ground floor commercial unit. The building itself, Varvils Court, dates from 1870 and is Grade II listed.
