It is the latest racially-motivated crime in York. Police are investigating an attack on a student at the University of York, abuse directed at a taxi driver outside a city centre restaurant and a number of instances of racist graffiti in parks and at a restaurant.

Residents told a recent City of York Council meeting that racial slurs have been levelled at children amid an increase in bigotry.

It comes after the flagging campaign saw hundreds of England flags illegally attached to lampposts across York.
