Police have ordered a crackdown after Selby youths threw fireworks in the town centre.
There were numerous reports of young people throwing eggs and stones at members of the public and vehicles last night too.
The fireworks were being set off in public places where there were lots of people around.
Officers say the trouble is endangering public safety and won’t be tolerated.
They are investigating as it is illegal for anyone under 18 to purchase and possess adult fireworks in a public place.
To try to stem the trouble, police have issued a dispersal order in Selby, which will run until 8pm tomorrow (Thursday).
It is likely to be extended to cover Thursday night and the weekend.
The order allows police to disperse anyone engaging in anti-social behaviour and reduces the likelihood of the public being harassed, alarmed or distressed.
Failing to comply with an order is a criminal offence. Officers can return anyone under the age of 16 to their home address. Anyone found breaching a notice is liable to be arrested and face further action.
Sergeant Lauren McGillivray from the Selby Neighbourhood Policing team said: “This type of behaviour will not be tolerated in Selby and North Yorkshire as it causes distress and alarm to members of the public.
“The safety of the local community is our priority and any incidents reported will be taken seriously.
“We will be increasing patrols and officers will be utilising the additional powers from the dispersal notice when appropriate.”
