Thief strikes at York bear statue

A bear statue in York is more bare than it should be.

The Chalfont Bear, found on Chalfonts, Tadcaster Road, has been targeted by a thief.

They made off with the statue’s plaque, overnight between Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We know the the statue is a prominent and much-loved local landmark.

“We’re appealing for anyone with information about what has happened to the plaque to contact us – particularly if they have relevant CCTV or video doorbell footage of the location.”

The stolen plaque refers to an award won by the developers, Shepherd, in 1969, according to this source.
