When he was elected, he was Baby of the House – now Keir Mather is a minister in His Majesty’s government.
Mr Mather became Labour’s MP for Selby and Ainsty in a by-election in 2023. Then aged 25, he was the youngest MP at the time.
At the 2024 General Election he held what had then become the Selby seat.
Mr Mather had already been picked out by Keir Starmer, who made him an opposition whip just months before last year’s election.
Now Prime Minister, Sir Keir has appointed his Selby namesake as a minister.

He’s been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Transport.
Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander said on X she was delighted to welcome home “as part of my fantastic ministerial team. Together we will continue to drive forward this Labour government’s work to rebuild a transport system Britain can rely on.”
In reply Mr Mather said: “It’s a privilege to join Heidi Alexander and a fantastic team of ministers.
“Keeping Britain moving is central to achieving economic growth. Looking forward to getting started!”
