Naked cyclists will take to York’s streets this weekend

Scores of naked cyclists will saddle up and take to the streets of York again tomorrow (Saturday).

The York World Naked Bike Ride 2024 sets off from Millennium Bridge at 4pm.

It has become an annual summer event. Organisers say clothing is optional for participants, and people are invited to go “as bare as you dare”.

They say the event is to “protest the inadequate cycling infrastructure and car-infested roads which are dangerous enough to put some people off cycling.

“Protest the ongoing lunacy of fossil-fuel based culture. Celebrate bikes and cycles and human-powered transport and the bodies which provide that power.”

One of the organisers, John Cossham, told YorkMix last year that they always get a good response.

“People clap, cheer, laugh, they that is very widely enjoyed by people, not just the participants, because it’s a celebration,” he said.

The route, which is not disclosed in advance, is around seven miles and takes about an hour and a half, including stops.

It includes a ride through York city centre.

Organisers invited people to “make the ride a carnival of colour and noise and spectacle by riding naked or in fancy dress, ringing bike bells or bringing music equipment attached to your bike, and decorating your bike”.

According to the weather forecasters, it will be dry and about 18°C at the time of the ride.
