York’s royal street is now looking very different – after two buildings were demolished.
Work to knock down the former Spice Club Restaurant and Minster Car and Van Hire buildings has now been completed.
They have been removed by owners of the site, York property company North Star, to make way for a new hotel.
Demolition began in October. The planned 12-week demolition period was extended due to archaeological interest on the site.
One of the buildings now gone was built for the Micklegate Motor Company in 1910, and later became Kennings Garage.
North Star won planning permission for the site in September 2020 and announced that Supercity would operate the boutique 62-bed aparthotel.
An application to amend the plans was submitted in December. This sought to increase the height by 40cm and change the internal layout from 62 to 46 bedrooms. It was withdrawn in January.
Supercity can now appoint a contractor to build the hotel according to the original plans.

Founded in 2009, Supercity specialises in serviced apartment hotels and have six existing venues in London, Manchester and Brighton.
