Meet the people still serving York – 23 brilliant pictures celebrate the city that remains open for business

York is doing its bit in this second lockdown.

Residents are obeying the new restrictions, as part of the latest city-wide and national push to save lives – with the hope of ushering in better times ahead.

And while most of the city centre reflects this hunkering down – shops closed and shuttered, streets quiet – there is still a significant minority of businesses still opening their doors and serving the people.

The government is permitting a wider range of businesses classed as essential to continue to trade.

And York photographer Duncan Lomax – who runs Ravage Productions – wanted to highlight their efforts.

“It is a gloomy time for most of us, but I wanted to capture some of the positive side of this lockdown,” Duncan said.

“These photographs are a celebration of York’s remarkable independent businesses, their resilience, and the amazing people who run them.

“I hope lots of people will get out and support them through this lockdown – as well as supporting those now trading online only.

“And when everything does reopen, let’s get out and make it a shop local Christmas. We don’t want to lose any of these great York businesses.”
