York Proms is returning this summer – and they’re looking for local talent to perform on the community stage.
The much-loved annual music event is back at Museum Gardens on Sunday 28 July, and the search is on for brilliant acts to help warm up the crowd on the community stage.
The organisers are looking for local choirs, groups and soloists to perform to up to 2,000 people on the day, both ahead of the main show and during the interval.
Founder of the York Proms, Rebecca Newman, said, “It’s so important for people learning their skills, or wanting exposure for their blossoming career, to get the opportunity to perform to a large crowd with professional sound support.
“I performed on many community stages in the early years of my career, which helped build my support base and gain valuable experience that served me well once I was performing as a guest soloist in my own right in front of thousands of people.
“It’s very important to me to pay it forward and offer up-and-coming talent the same chances as I had. It’s such a privilege to be able to do it for others now.”
Rebecca has spent many years working as a professional singer and is a classical No.1 selling soprano.
The second stage will begin shortly after 5.30pm, after the main gates open, and York Proms favourites, Lucy’s Pop Choir, are already confirmed to perform. Lucy’s Pop Choir have supported the Proms in various ways since the first event in 2017, from performing on the stage to serenading the audience while they are queuing to enter the gardens.
Other performers over the years have included York College Dance, NETheatre, and Chris Hagyard.
“We are open to all sorts of acts that would translate well outside to a large crowd, so we encourage people to apply, especially if they have video footage to showcase their act,” said Rebecca.
